Description
These fun character ‘science of reading’ aligned word mapping templates are a powerful and effective tool designed to aid struggling readers and to promote Orthographic Mapping in the brain. They can be easily integrated into any structured literacy programme and used alongside your word-building and phonemic awareness activities.
Word lists have been included for blending short vowel words.
- CVC, CCVC, CVCC and CCCVC word lists for ease of use. Pick a list that suits the level you are working with and use the words to give to your students orally.
A simple word mapping routine would be:
Choose a word mapping template with a cute character blender.
- Say the word out loud and ask your students to repeat the word out loud.
- Ask your student to finger tap or touch each box for each sound.
- Get your students to use their character blending stick to blend through the sounds from left to right.
- To build even stronger orthographic brain connections, get your students to write one sound per box and finish by writing the whole word on the handwriting lines.
⭐️ Laminate these sheets or put them in sheet protectors so you can re-use them and use wipe-off markers for multiple opportunities to practice.
Word mapping activities allow children to practice and reinforce their understanding of sound-to-letter correspondences, and also help children read and spell more complex words. This gives children fun when blending and segmenting words.
I hope you enjoy using these word mapping templates with your students.
